Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins nació en Londres en 1863. Cursó estudios de derecho en la Universidad de Cambridge y ejerció como abogado entre 1887 y 1994, año de la publicación de El prisionero de Zenda. Si bien por aquel entonces Hope ya había editado varios relatos, sin duda esta novela le valió el mayor reconocimiento literario, lo que propició la redacción de su segunda parte, Rupert de Hentzau, cuatro años más tarde. Los personajes y el escenario, el ficticio reino centroeuropeo de Ruritania, han sido recuperados a lo largo de los años en narrativa, teatro, radio, televisión y cine, siendo especialmente célebres las adaptaciones a la gran pantalla de 1937 y 1952. Prolífico autor, Hope fue nombrado sir por su labor propagandística durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. Murió en Surrey en 1933. Arturo Pérez-Reverte nació en Cartagena, España, en 1951. Fue reportero de guerra durante veintiún años. Con más de quince millones de ejemplares vendidos en todo el mundo, varias de sus novelas han sido llevadas al cine y la televisión. Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876-1958) was one of the United Statess most popular early mystery authors. Born in Pittsburgh to a clerk at a sewing machine agency, Rinehart trained as a nurse and married a doctor after her graduation from nursing school. She wrote fiction in her spare time until a stock market crash sent her and her young husband into debt, forcing her to lean on her writing to pay the bills. Her first two novels, The Circular Staircase (1908) and The Man in Lower Ten (1909), established her as a bright young talent, and it wasnt long before she was one of the nations most popular mystery novelists.Among her dozens of novels are The Amazing Adventures of Letitia Carberry (1911), which began a six-book series, and The Bat (originally published in 1920 as a play), which was among the inspirations for Bob Kanes Batman. Credited with inventing the phrase The butler did it, Rinehart is often called an American Agatha Christie, even though she began writing much earlier than Christie, and was much more popular during her heyday.
