A. C. Swinburne called Robert Herrick, “The greatest song-writer ever born of the English race.” Herrick was an ordained Episcopal minister who, in his youth, had been one of the Cavalier poets of the “Sons of Ben” literary circle. He rose from a tragic childhood – his father had committed suicide a year after his birth – to become one of the foremost poets of his time. He was born in Cheapside, London, in 1581, and passed away in Devon, Exeter, in 1674.
