- Keller's townspeople are still fond of showing the favorite haunts of the old poet, who died in 1890, and of telling anecdotes of his kindly humor and genial bluntness. And well may, the people of Switzerland point to him with pride, for it was the Florentine day of their national art when two men whose names would have made famous any city in Christendom, Gottfried Keller and Arnold Bocklin, lived and wrought in a single Swiss town. The Sieben Legenden represents Keller at his best. Their naive ingenuousness, poetic charm, and quaint humor have made these legends a favorite book among German-speaking peeples the world over. They are offered here, for the first time in English, in the hope that this little volume may add to the enjoyment of many who love the whole some and the pure in literature.
- Acerca de Gottfried Keller
Gottfried Keller wurde am 19. Juli 1819 in Zürich geboren. Nach dem Verweis von der Industrieschule Zürich bildete er sich autodidaktisch weiter. Ab 1840 lebte er als Maler in München, 1842 kehrte er nach Zürich zurück und widmete sich, unterstützt von der Mutter, dem Schreiben. 1846 erschien ein Band seiner Gedichte, 1848/49 hatte er ein Stipendium zum Studium in Heidelberg. Von 1850 bis 1855 hielt Keller sich in Berlin auf. Ab 1861 war er erster Stadtschreiber in Zürich, er pflegte Bekanntschaften u.a. mit Paul Heyse, Theodor Storm und Richard Wagner. Er starb am 15. Juli 1890 in Zürich.
